Hey future grads!
Senior year is a roller-coaster, and one of the highlights is getting your senior portraits taken. These pics will capture you at a pivotal moment, right before you head off into the big, wide world. As a photographer who's worked with tons of high school seniors, I’m here to help you prep for a session that’ll take your portraits from awkward to awesome. Let’s dive in!
1. Outfits That Scream “You”
Your outfits should reflect your personality. Are you into bold colors or more chill vibes? Love sports, arts, or something totally unique? Bring a mix to showcase all the sides of you. Think:
- Casual Vibes: Your everyday style.
- Dress to Impress: Something a bit more polished.
- Hobby Gear: If you’re a musician, athlete, or artist, rep your passion.
2. Hair and Makeup Game
Whether you’re DIYing it or hiring a pro, plan ahead. Stick to looks that make you feel confident and like yourself. Tips:
Keep It Real: Opt for natural makeup to highlight your features.
Test Runs: Try new hairstyles a few weeks before the shoot to avoid any surprises.
3. Props to You
Props add a unique touch to your photos. Think about what defines you:
- Sports Stuff: Soccer ball, tennis racket, or your letterman jacket.
- Instruments: Guitar, violin, or whatever you play.
- Creative Tools: Books, art supplies, or anything that showcases your hobbies.
- Pets: I've worked with horses, dogs, cats, and pocket pets. As long as you have it on a lead and control bring your critters! (Please let your photographer know ahead of time so we can also find a location that is pet friendly.)
4. Find the Perfect Spot
The location sets the mood. Choose a place that means something to you or offers a killer backdrop. Popular choices include:
City Streets: Urban areas with cool graffiti walls and parks.
Nature Vibes: Forests, fields, or near water.
School Grounds: Capture memories at your high school.
5. Pose Like a Pro
Feeling awkward in front of the camera? Totally normal. With a bit of practice, you’ll nail it. Tips:
- Practice: Try poses in front of a mirror.
- Chill: Keep your body loose to avoid stiff poses.
- Angles: Find your best side by experimenting with different angles.
6. Vibe with Your Photographer
A good connection with your photographer can make all the difference. Don’t be shy—share your ideas and concerns. The more comfortable you are, the better your photos will be. We’re here to make you look amazing!
7. Bring a Buddy
I always suggest bring mom or dad, or both! Having someone you trust at your session can help ease nerves and capture some candid moments. They can help with outfit changes, fixing hair, or just making you laugh. Plus, I always make sure to include them in at least a few frames. ;)
8. Hydrate and Chill
Make sure you’re well-rested and hydrated before your session. This will help you look and feel your best. Avoid trying new skincare products right before the shoot to prevent any reactions.
9. Enjoy the Moment
Most importantly, have fun! This is your time to shine and celebrate your achievements. Embrace the moment and let your personality shine through your photos.
Your senior portrait session is more than just a photo shoot; it’s a celebration of who you are and where you’re headed. With these tips, you’re sure to slay your session and walk away with portraits that you’ll cherish forever. Can’t wait to capture your awesomeness!
